New England Journal of Medicine is first published.

(Jan.) Originally the New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery and the Collateral Branches of Medical Science, it is published by Drs. John Collins Warren and James Jackson. The first medical journal in New England, it is the oldest in continuous publication in the U.S. It merges with the Boston Medical Intelligencer to become the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal in 1828, is purchased by the Massachusetts Medical Society in 1921, and assumes its current name in 1928. The magazine begins to publish digitized content in 1996. Its offices are currently located in Waltham.
